Biography
K.S. is Assistant Professor/ Senior researcher at Leiden University. She studied at Montpellier III, Paris IV Sorbonne, EPHE Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, INALCO (School of Oriental Cultures and Languages) and at Leiden University (history, religious studies and oriental languages). Her research considers the European linguistic and cultural policies in the Levant (1860-1948) and its reception, with a focus on French heritage in a comparative perspective in Palestine. She is also researching on European missionaries in Palestine (Jerusalem East Mission; French Catholic missions).
She is currently involved in the following research projects:
– the role of language and education among the Palestinian Catholic communities (The Netherlands National Research Agency NWO project ‘Arabic and its alternatives. Religion and Language Change in the Formative Years of the Modern Middle East (1920-1950)’, 2012-2017);
– the engagement of Christian missions in Humanitarianism in the Middle East (NWO project ‘Engaging Europe in the Arab World: European missionaries and humanitarianism in the Middle East; 1850-1970’, 2015-2018).
– the NWO project ‘Crossroads. European cultural diplomacy and Arab Christians in Palestine. A connected history during the formative years of the Middle East; 1918-1948’ (2018-2022)

- Cultural policies (and the question of the birth of cultural diplomacy) and their consequences in the Mandate/ missionaries relations

- Influence of Catholic missionaries on the local churches (focus on the Latin and Melkite Catholic communities ; Latin Patriarchate, Ste Anne seminary ; arabization desires, question of an Arab clergy/ Patriarchate)
- Nationalisation of the denominational Catholic schools after WWII and the creation of the State of Israel

KS est historienne, enseignante/chercheure à l’université de Leyde (Pays-Bas). Elle a étudié dans les universités de Montpellier III, Paris IV, INALCO, EPHE et l’université de Leyde (Pays-Bas). Ses recherches s’intéressent aux politiques linguistiques et culturelles en Palestine (1860-1948) et à leur reception ainsi qu’aux missionnaires européens en Palestine (Jerusalem East Mission; missions catholiques françaises).
